We visit with Elodie Blomfield, who playes Phoebe on Ted Lasso.
Welcome back to the Crown & Anchor, Greyhounds! In this bonus episode Marisa, Christian, and Brett have a conversation with the delightful Elodie Blomfield, who portrays Roy's adorable and precocious niece Phoebe on the show Ted Lasso.
We chatted with Elodie about her experience as an actress on the Ted Lasso set as well as her experience on stage in other projects. She (playfully) dished about the behaviors of some of her co-stars on set and shared with us some of the funniest moments from behind the scenes. (Side note to the producers, editors, and the entire technical/creative team: THE FANS WANT BLOOPERS!)
We also discovered that Elodie and RTWD host Christian are on opposite sides of a bitter football rivalry, but thankfully we were able to keep the situation from escalating. You can nominate them for a peace prize at nobelprize.org
Finally, we want to give a special thank-you to Elodie's mother, Rachel, who was kind enough to help Elodie set aside time to have this special conversation with us at RTWD!
For those of you who haven’t finished watching season 2 - this is your official spoiler alert, as there are some light spoilers contained within this episode.

Marisa
I have the wonderful opportunity to introduce you to our guests today, Elodie Blomfield, you know her as Roy Kent's neice Phoebe and Ted lasso. We watched her grow as an actress having started on Ted Lasso with a one off appearance, and doing so well that some of the most memorable moments in season two are entirely built around her and Brett Goldstein, we connected with Elodie's mom, Rachel on Instagram, and we're excited that she was willing to let us speak with Elodie for a bit today. For those of you who aren't through Season 2 yet,This is your official spoiler alert. There will be some discussion of Season 2.
Christian
Elodie, it's so nice to meet you. Thanks for joining us today.
Elodie Blomfield
Thank you for having me. I'm very excited to be here.
Christian
We are excited to meet you also. So my guess is before being on title so you do not watch a lot of TV shows like Ted Lasso, because it's a show for grownups. So before the show came along, what were some of the things that you used to like to watch on TV some of your favorite shows?
Elodie Blomfield
I like to watch a show called Strictly Dancing. But I think over there it's called Dancing with the Stars. Oh, yes.
Marisa
That's one of my favorites too.
Elodie Blomfield
I didn't really have a favorite though, I like to watch comedy shows on Netflix like Sam and Cat.
Christian
Yes. Shows comedy shows named after multiple children are very popular in my house. I think you should start telling everybody you know that you want to be on Dancing with the Stars because now that you're on TV, you might be able to join like as a special contestant or something.
Elodie Blomfield
I think when I first watched I really wanted to be on it. And then when I realized you had to be famous. I was thinking, I think acting will be how I get there. Hopefully,
Brett
this is the same way that our daughter thinks she's gonna be on Dancing with the Stars or she wants to show the Masked Singer she wants to get famous so she can be on the masked singer.
Christian
That might not have made it over there yet..
Marisa
It's a pretty good show, too. So Elodie, the first few times you were on set, How did it compare to what you had imagined?
Elodie Blomfield
It was a very, very different, I didn't think there would be so many takes, I thought it would just be a couple of takes from a couple of different angles. Not as many angles as they did not stopping and starting and just filming one person role take. I also didn't think I'd get as much time to talk with the other actors and actresses. I thought they just film video or the scene. Then they give us a few tips film the scene again. Don't know sometimes said how did you break in between so I could talk with genuine Brett? Because they're who I was with most the time? And yeah, really got to move them.
Christian
You probably thought there wouldn't be so many takes because you knew your lines. So well. Brett Goldstein recently did interview with someone here in the United States, a famous author by the name of Brene Brown, and he said that you came with your lines very prepared and that you were super Professional. So who helps you practice at home? And how do like your mom or dad's impersonations of Brett and Juno hold up to how you found them to be?
Elodie Blomfield
Well, my mom usually practices my lines with me. She doesn't do an impersonation of any of their voices. But then when my dad does it rarely, usually when my mom's too tired to practice them with me. My dad does it with me. And he usually does an impersonation of them, which I don't think are too bad.
Marisa
My Brett does a pretty good Roy impression, or at least he likes to think so.
Christian
So in addition to talking to people, what else did you do between takes like, did you have homework to do? Or did you have other assignments for the show?
Elodie Blomfield
For the Christmas episode, I had to do my work there. Because I was filming all week, and I couldn't do any school. Even though it was I was isolating during that time. Well, because of lockdown. Not really isolating. But I had to do homework there. So make sense? Yes. Do it there? We did, because I wasn't even going to scope. Then. Does that make sense? Or am I using me and you
Brett
It makes total sense.
Elodie Blomfield
And yeah, I did it there. I had to do that in between takes that I had my double there? Because yeah. And we had fun. I can't remember exactly how much work I did get most of it.
Christian
So what does your double do? Because you know you didn't have any death defying stunts. So what's the job of Elodie's double?
Elodie Blomfield
It wasn't a stunt double. At first I was a bit annoyed because I thought I don't want to stunt double. I want to do all the stunts I want to do on the chase would be really fun. But then it wasn't a stunt double. I didn't have to fall any stairs or dswing from aChristmas tree. And usually we wouldn't be filmed with all the people at the same time. So I think that they got her to test out the scenes they were doing because I'd be down when I did go down that I'd be down there for so long. So me filming the scenes. I needed to get some of my work done and I'm a kid so they got her to test out the scenes and things and we were more like than we were supposed to be. No not even joking. We are so similar not in lick but also in personality. I think we're long lists twins. left handed and it's quite rare to be tempted. We both amela amongst macaroni cheese. We both wear glasses for the exact same reason
Christian
To see better? That's the reason I'm wearing glasses
Elodie Blomfield
well because one is weaker than the other right and I wear glasses just strengthen it up. And we both got the exact same week I the left one. So it's pretty cool.
Marisa
Wow, we're gonna have to make a movie about you and your double long lost twins.
Brett
Speaking of similarities and differences, what are some ways that you imagine or perceive for Phoebe the character to be different from led the actress?
Elodie Blomfield
I think we all quite similar because I've throughout Ted Lasso I've made her more and more like me. But I still think we are quite different. Because she is two years younger than me and see acting with me. Although the way she speaks and the word she uses not really the way she speaks. But the words she use says they're really grown up and half of them. I don't know them human golf. So a lot of words I've learned from TV.
Christian
How do you explain what the show is like to your friends because it's not really you know, a show that is meant for kids that are your age or Phoebe's age. So how do you explain to them like why what you're doing when you're gone or when you're on TV?
Elodie Blomfield
Usually just tell them that it's an adult show about football. It's a comedy on Apple TV. They should watch it because it It's not very appropriate. And it's swears a lot in it. And their parent's should watch it on Apple TV, because it's a very good show. And when I tell them that I had a lot of swearing in, most people's first question is, do you have to swear? I say, I don't have to swear. But I have a scene where I'm getting told off.
Marisa
I've heard that Brett Goldstein kind of has a potty mouth like his character, Roy is did he have to wash his mouth when he was around you?
Elodie Blomfield
Yeah. He doesn't swear as much as Roy does. But he does. I think the first time I heard him swear, I was a bit shocked because I didn't think he would swear around me. I wasn't sure if he actually did swear, I didn't think he'd swear around me. I didn't how much he swears when I'mm not around.
Christian
That means he's doing a good job. He doesn't have to pay money into the swear jar. Helps him to save up. What are some things when you've been around Juno and Brett that you've learned from them about acting since they're older, more experienced actors than you are?
Elodie Blomfield
Oh, I've learned that you don't have to get your lines always perfect. But that's one of the four questions. I thought you'd have to get all your lights perfect. I thought there'd be quite a lot of pressure. But working with Juno and Brett Rexy realize that there isn't because even they make mistakes. Sometimes. It makes me feel a bit more relaxed when I do make mistakes. They really helped.
Brett
Speaking of the amazing acting jobs that Brad Goldstein and Juno Temple do in scenes with your character. There is the scene from the Christmas episode where Roy is smelling your breath, which is maybe one of the funniest moments of the entire season. How did you keep from breaking character there? And are there any other scenes that were really tough not to laugh with your co stars while you were shooting?
Elodie Blomfield
I think this the Christmas episode one where he's freezing. I didn't really I found it funny, but I didn't really get the joke. My mom kept asking me afterwards. How did you not laugh in that scene? I was just thinking maybe that's just an adult to find that hard to read. Correct for them. For there was one scene in the color eating ice cream. Roy Spitz's ice cream down at one point. There was one time where he was holding it. And he actually admitted it down. Upside down. The ice cream one
Christian
very nice car.
Elodie Blomfield
Very nice car. And we're just thinking why would you carry on with ice cream melting in a really nice car.
Brett
Save the ice cream!
Marisa
I was gonna say I wasn't worried about the car. I was worried about the ice cream.
Christian
Look at the bright side. You didn't spill the ice cream. So now. Ice cream comes up a lot in the show. Do you have any favorite types of ice cream in real life?
Elodie Blomfield
In real life? Like favorite ice cream? You see the chocolate or cookie dough? There are two escapes and it's both of them. Even better.
Brett
Cookie dough is one of my all time favorites that and cookies and cream so I guess I just have a liking for cookies and ice cream.
Elodie Blomfield
I think it's called cookie and cream over here.
Brett
Well if you come to the States or you see some Oreo like cookies and cream or Oreo ice cream, you should try it. I think you would like it.
Marisa
Yes, it's really really good.
Elodie Blomfield
I think we might have it's just I've never tried.
Christian
You should probably start taking over the ice cream shopping for the family.
Marisa
So Elodie, I have a question is not on our list is not one we've asked you before. I'm gonna go kind of backward to when we were talking about your favorite show. One of our kids favorite shows is a show called Bluey. Have you ever seen it before?
Elodie Blomfield
I don't think I've heard of that one.
Marisa
But it's an Australian show and our children like to sort of try out Australian accents. Do you? Do you ever try out any accents?
Elodie Blomfield
I do American accent sometimes for self tapes. I don't think I've ever had to do an Australian accent. Although sometimes I just randomly practice it
Marisa
should Would you do a little bit of an American accent for us?
Elodie Blomfield
Hi, my name is Elodie Blomfield. And I'm doing an interview right now.
Marisa
That was good!
Christian
How has the audition process changed for you? Because for a while it was all online and all video. What's it been like now to have some in person auditions now that the pandemic is getting better?
I don't think I've had any first round and passing auditions. But recently, I've been going in person for seven rounds. But usually, in the pandemic, they'd be on Zoom. So it's been really nice going to the meet people in person. And it's helpful because on Zoom sometimes I don't really know how to talk to them. Because I can't really move around in the space, right? I have to just Yeah, tada. On zoom. We met in person, you can move around. Unless it's a really tight room. There is still usually a tight group Yeah.
Marisa
What are some of your hobbies Elodie? When you're not playing Phoebe? When you're not doing schoolwork? What would what does a normal day look like for you?
Elodie Blomfield
Well, I do gymnastics twice a week. So I really like doing gymnastics so I don't go a day without doing it. Sometimes I just do it without even realizing just by myself doing cartwheels and woods rolls. And then we've got a little chin up bar, just by comparison between a doorway. And I like spinning around that. I also like climbing.
Christian
Oh, that is fun, like rock climbing.
Elodie Blomfield
Yes. I recently joined the rock climbing club. I've only had one session though. So I don't really know if I can count.
Christian
I saw that your mom posted of this rock climbing club. And that wall looked humongous. Do you know how tall that wall was that you were climbing?
Elodie Blomfield
I don't know. But I know it was really tall.
Christian
I was impressed that you were not on the kiddie wall. You are on the full on full size realistic rock wall. So kudos to you for taking that on.
Elodie Blomfield
Thank you. I think you get it from my brother, even though he's younger than me. I still think you'd get it from him because he claims everything he can see.
Brett
So we had a question here about what's something that you like to do that you haven't had a chance to do as your character Phoebe on the show. So it sounds like we're gonna have to have a scene where Roy and Keeley take Phoebe rock climbing. That sounds like it'd be an excellent scene. Writers if you're listening, we're formally submitting a rock climbing.
Marisa
That's a good idea. All the writers are listening, I'm sure.
Christian
Another scene I also will not seen seen. But a place I'd want to go is in the stadium and really went to work to match and go to the locker rooms and see Rebecca's office. I also really want to try Ted's biscuits that he makes this I'm really jealous because apparently they have they sell them over there in America.
Well, the word on the street is that in the first season, the biscuits where I believe as you would say over they're rubbish, they were just not very good at all. And so for second season for the season two, they improved the prop biscuit recipe and they were in fact delicious and a lot of people in the states that are fans of the show will try their hand at making biscuits and make them for special occasions or is there mostly butter and sugar so they're amazing.
Brett
There are no shortage of recipes to find either. Yeah. They claim to be authentic copycat recipes. Maybe they'll have a challenge on that British Bake Off to make Ted's biscuits sometime you white line? I'd be fun.
Marisa
Aren't you watching it or repeat? Famous biscuit
So with your very authentic American accents, if would you be interested in coming to the US for a visit? And if you did come visit, what would be the thing you would look forward to the most?
Unknown Speaker
Tons of things. I want to see everything, but especially Disneyland. The what's it called? Statue of Liberty?
Marisa
You just need to do a whole tour.
Christian
You're kind of in a Disney vibe right now. Because you shared with us that you just got to go to a stage production of The Lion King, and you're getting ready to attend a stage production of frozen. So it doesn't have to be a Disney play or musical. But do you have any plays or musicals that you'd like to act in? Someday?
Unknown Speaker
I'd like to be in Mathilda on the West End.
Christian
That's a good goal.
Unknown Speaker
Yeah. Although I think I'm going to be a bit too tall for Matilda.
Christian
You were you recently did some stage work and a local production of Matilda, what was something that was fun about that?
Unknown Speaker
Everything. I love theater work. Because you just get that magical feeling. Because you can see everyone watching you and having fun. And it's really different to TV. A first you might feel a bit nervous getting on stage, then you start to remember all your lines, and you just forget about those nerves. And then you feel really excited, or it's super fun.
Brett
Or the nice thing is there are no shortage of West End actors and actresses on the Ted Lasso set. Obviously, Hannah Waddingham is a big West End star. So it's it's hopefully you can get some tips from her as far as how to how to keep those nerves down and how to how to get more roles in the West End. We'd love to see you up there someday.
Elodie Blomfield
I think I'd ask her how she deals with her nerves. Like you said that. But because that was just a small company. I didn't feel as much pressure. Because it's all a stand. I think you'd be expected to be perfect. Because people pay quite a bit of money to come see.
Marisa
Yes, yes, they do.
Unknown Speaker
I think however, if I was on stage, I West End, I think I would quit quite nervous. Seeing everyone watch me and think ing she's got to do it perfectly
Christian
I know I'm quite nervous right now for this next question, because I know the answer to it, but I'm going to ask it anyway. Does your family have any favorite football clubs in real life?
Elodie Blomfield
Yes.
Christian
Which Football Club?
Elodie Blomfield
Ipswich Town. But we can still be friends.
Christian
I think that this will be a wonderful act of diplomacy. Our listeners do know I've mentioned before on our show that I'm a Norwich fan. And their rival is in fact, Ipswich. And so that technically puts Elodie and I on the opposite sides of football rivalry but we will meet in the middle hopefully, as an example to everybody else. And maybe I don't know that you will win a peace prize someday or something.
Brett
I'll nominate the both of you. I know a bit about Norwich having been Christians for him, but I don't know much about Ipswich. What is the the Ipswich mascot? What is the nickname for Ipswich?
Elodie Blomfield
I don't know. Yeah, my dad is mostly about it. So I think that's the base. Maybe the reason why I do suppose. So he knows a lot about the call the tractor boys. Oh, yeah. They called the tractor boys.
Christian
The tractor boys. Oh man, tractor boys versus canaries. That's quite the battle.
Brett
It sounds like they should be a football club in Texas with that name.
Marisa
I was gonna say I feel like Ted Lasso would really like them.
Christian
It might be Ted Lasso's next job. That might be how the series wraps up. He goes to Ipswich Town to become a Tractor Boy.
Marisa
So led if we look up in 20 years and you're not acting maybe only because you chose not to, what would you like to be doing?
Elodie Blomfield
Probably a Vet because I really like animals, like Phoebe. Except I don't think I want to do it in the wild, I prefer to go to just a veterinary clinic and help them and know what I'm dealing with. See, I'd like to help pets get better at home, because I'm not allowed to pet at my own home. And then if I'd be around, then I can be with animals all day long. That would be very nice.
Brett
You haven't convinced your parents to get you a cat like your character in Ted Lasso
Elodie Blomfield
Not yet.. But if I was to get a pet. I would actually prefer dogs.
Marisa
We're all dog People.
Elodie Blomfield
I think dogs are more excitable and can do more things. Although I do really like cats. I yeah, I like any animal. I'd have any pets. Just my top choice would be a dog.
Christian
So I Elodie it's been great talking with you before we let you go. Do you have any other projects coming out where we can look for you?
Elodie Blomfield
Well, I have found one recently. And I have fun one coming up but I don't think I can talk about it yet.
Christian
That's okay, secrets are good. And that is one thing that the Ted Lasso cast and crew have all done a really good job of is keeping secrets on that show and it's made it fun for us to watch and so I think that is very good of you to hold that confidentiality well but we will keep our eyes peeled.
Brett
Yeah and when we when we see probably your co stars and your your colleagues new shows, we will share the work that you're doing we'll be sure to spread it to so the fans can see you in your in other shows and other projects.
Christian
It was super fun to talk with you and we can't wait to see all of the stuff that you're going to do. And hopefully we'll see you again pop up and Ted Lasso sometime.
Marisa
Thank you.
Elodie Blomfield
It's been a pleasure
Brett
Okay, y'all That is our show we had such a great time chatting with Elodie about her acting career and her time on Ted Lasso. Her mom Rachel manages an Instagram feed that you can find led underscore Blomfield if you don't know how to spell that it will be in our show notes.
Marisa
You can keep the conversation going with us on Twitter and Instagram to our handle on both is @TedLassoPod.
